Brass wire used to manufacture fish farm cage mesh

The HALCOR Group offers top quality products that meet the  needs of its customers.To achieve that, it has established a partnership with the Japanese company Mitsubishi Shindoh for producing, through its subsidiary FITCO S.A., wire used to manufacture mesh for fish farm cages.The mesh is made from UR30® copper alloy.

The UR30® wire, with a copper content of more than 60%, retains all the properties of copper, i.e. it is an environmentally friendly, highly durable, corrosion resistant and fully recyclable material.

The UR30® wire is custom designed for fish farms.It has been used for the manufacture of fish farm cages in the US, South America, Australia, Asia and Japan. 


Technical Description

To manufacture this special wire, a brass alloy is used consisting mainly of copper, zinc and tin.The UR30® wire, of a diameter ranging between 2mm to 6mm, is formed into a mesh by special formation machinery.The mesh consists of square openings with square side lengths ranging between 18mm and 100mm. 


Brass Fish Farm Cages

There are various advantages to using brass cages in fish farms.

The benefits in terms of the environment, management and production are significant and internationally acknowledged.

Using bras alloys to manufacture fish farm cage mesh protects against pollution, without the use of chemicals to combat bio-contamination.A brass cage contributes towards water regeneration and oxygenation, thus making the environment in which fish are farmed cleaner and healthier.  It is also highly durable and resistant to corrosion, while at the same time maintaining its shape, volume and good condition with minimum maintenance required.This helps reduce operating costs as there is no need for frequent diver maintenance operations, which ensures lower fish stress and mortality rates.

FITCO S.A., in cooperation with the Hellenic Copper Development Institute and other scientific bodies, started R&D tests, concerning the UR30 wire, in Greece, in June 2011, aiming to implement the most innovative and environmentally friendly solution for the fish farming industry.

The first brass cage in Greece was installed in Palairon, Aitoloakarnania, in May 2013, by the International Copper Association, the Hellenic Copper Development Institute, FITCO S.A. and PROTEAS S.A., in cooperation with scientific bodies.
